Think allergies are only in the spring? Think again.

prevent Fall allergies with indoor air quality upgrades
Don’t you just love fall? College football, ragweed, high school football, cotton dust. There are two common themes here, and only one is fun. The other, not so much.

If you think only of spring allergies, then Armstrong Plumbing, Air & Electric, your heating and air conditioning authority for Lubbock and the surrounding area, must be the bearer of bad tidings. Fall allergies are alive and well in West Texas. According to the folks at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, several Texas cities rank very high for fall allergies when compared to other parts of the country.

Right at the top of the list of pollen producers is ragweed season. In late summer and early fall the weeds can spread fine yellow pollen up to hundreds of miles—blown around by the winds we are famous for.

Did You Know?

A single ragweed plant can produce up to 1-billion grains of pollen every season.

There are some things you can do to protect yourself if you suffer greatly:

  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak pollen hours of 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
  • Try to stay inside on dry & windy days
  • Wear a facemask
  • Change clothes, shower, and shampoo after outdoor activities

Don’t make the mistake of thinking the allergy season ends with winter. Cotton is still king in much of West Texas, and the harvest reaches its peak in late fall and early winter. The cotton gin season can run into January. The harvest and ginning process produces dust, mites, molds, and smuts associated with the cotton plants. Many will have an allergic reaction.

Did You Know?

Because West Texas can go without rain for weeks or months the cotton dust can stay in the air for long periods of time.
